The word Rajgir means the ‘city of kings’ and was identical to its name. It was one of the most powerful places in ancient India and it served as the capital city of the Mauryan Empire for a long period. The Province under which it was flourishing was Magadh which was one of the most powerful Mahajanpads. It is believed that at the time of Mahabharat, King Jarasandh was its ruler and was an important province to be indulged in the war of Mahabharat.
