Pune Municipal Corporation’s ?5,500-crore Mula-Mutha riverfront development project will face a crucial test this monsoon season for environmental concerns. Part of the 44.4 km project is complete and the rains will reveal whether it will not cause flooding in riverside areas. PMC has readied a sample stretch and work is underway at other locations. Environmentalists are sceptical of the project’s effectiveness, while PMC claims it will reduce flooding. The project includes construction of pavements, developing ghats, carrying out plantation work, and beautifying the riverfront.
