Only 1,243 out of the 7,57,040 wetlands listed by the National Wetlands Atlas have been added to the Indian Wetlands website, leading to concerns that the significance of the country’s wetlands is being downplayed. Environmental groups have been fighting for the protection of intertidal wetlands, including some in the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary Management Plan 2020-2030, but these do not appear on the official map. The lack of clarity has allowed project proponents to claim that wetlands do not exist and are developable land parcels, according to B N Kumar, director of NatConnect Foundation.
